Autumn is nature’s most dramatic show. The sensational colorful transformation all around takes my breath away. It is the season for gatherings and I especially like to create a colorful welcome on our front porch. Bringing in autumnal colors in rich oranges, browns, gold and aubergine and layering in texture with elements from nature and some nubby sisal rugs harmonizes and complements the beauty in the surrounding garden. Pumpkins, gourds, bittersweet vine and seed pods are all easily found and will last through the season. An inviting fall tableau welcomes guests. Join me as I take you on a tour of our fall front porch.

It’s all about the layering. The mums are placed in a wrought iron planter to elevate them. Bittersweet wine is woven at the base for another layer and the eye is drawn to the planter’s height and pedestal detail by a garland cascading downwards. This same garland is repeated to frame the door and seasonal wreath.

Lanterns with seasonal candles and bittersweet vine details join more potted mums and flowering cabbage in harvest baskets. Gourds are strewn casually around to similate the abundance of nature at this time of year.

To create different heights in the arrangment, I rested the flowering cabbages on a log. The prop suits the decor!

The summer lantern is dressed for fall by swapping out the blue candles for orange ones and the addition of bittersweet.

The summer hydrangeas in the porch planter were still going strong and I wasn’t ready to part with them. My solution was to tuck in fall elements such as pheasant feathers, gourds, artichokes, hot pepper trailing garland, curly willow and lotus pods around the hydrangeas. This is now a spectacular fall planter harmonizing with the rest of the porch décor.

Seasonal pillows bring in another splash of fall’s rich hues while a nubby sisal keeps feet warm in fall’s nippy air while bringing in an organic textural element to the setting.

A coffe table detail with a mini pumpkin, bittersweet and a leaf shaped brass dish, a vintage ashtray repurposed as art.
I hope you have found inspiration for your own fall décor on this tour of our front porch. Savor this glorious season!

Thank you Selma! Working on the porch kept me from cooking this week though…have been thinking of your lamb all day….maybe Sunday will be the day to make it. Can’t wait:)

So so inviting, you have inspired me! I have bought pumpkins, but no mums or winter plants as it is still hot in Alabama…we had our first fall morning today with temps in the 40s so I can’t wait to go get some fall plants now! Love your pumpkin pillow and the gourds in your pot!
Jenna
Thanks so much Jenna! You were iwse to wait to get your mums. Those I bought in September peetered out quickly as it was just too hot still. Bet you love those dips in the 40s! I sure love seasonal changes in weather. So happy I inspired you with your fall decor. Happy October! Johanne

Hi, Johanne! You are so right…it’s all about the layering! Summertime makes us go lighter with our decorative accoutrements, but fall is the time to layer it on thick and rich and lush!!! You’ve done that very well here, and your front porch looks like a place I’d love to hang out!
I’m impressed with the ashtray-cum-artwork! That’s a great way to repurpose that! The little arrangement on the coffee table is wonderful with that single sprig of bittersweet trailing. Beautiful!
I’ve done absolutely nothing outdoors as yet. The way things are going with my back, I’m pretty sure that’s a moot point for this year. Oh, well…there’s always next year, I suppose.
Enjoy your beautiful porch and the wonderful change of season!
I’m so sorry your back is still an issue Alycia. Wish I could drop by and decorate your entrance for fall for you. It would be my pleasure. Thank you for your discerning eye and compliments on the porch. I appreciate it very much.
